These works originated with my visit to an abandoned Monastery in Arles, France, where the thick, stained glass window had been repaired so many times over many years that the lead grid was deformed, replacement glass colors did not quite match, and had aged differently. The variety spoke of a life of many changes, but still cohering.
The structure provided by imprecise rectangles, gives stability to support the tension of more free living color blocks and texture blocks. I hear that technique in works of Mark Rothko (1902-1970), Gerhard Richter and Jasper Johns, who also inspire me.
